Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 20–30 m tall.

Stems: Bark dark gray to black, rough, hard, furrowed throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, 6.5–15 cm long, 1–1,7 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 10–15 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in umbels arranged in terminal, paniculate inflorescences, peduncles terete (cylindrical) or quadrangular, 4–12 mm long, pedicels 1–6 mm long. buds clavate to fusiform, 4–6 mm long, ca. 3 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical to hemispherical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovules with axile placentation.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical to ovoid; 4–7 mm long; 4–6 mm wide; valves 3–4; level or included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; and Moloka'i; and regenerating within the plantations.
